No two couples are the same, so why should your romantic getaway be? It’s natural that you and your significant other want your travel destination to be as unique as you are; a reflection of who you are and the things you love to do as a couple. So, now the hard part… finding a place where you have the perfect balance of seclusion, excitement and relaxation, while also avoiding the hordes of honeymooners while you’re there.
No matter whether you’ve got a significant anniversary coming up or simply want to surprise someone special in your life, making plans for a romantic getaway is bound to evoke feelings of joy and excitement. The only potential downside is fretting over your choice of destination and hoping your partner will love it. There’s no need to be concerned though, as the following romantic getaways cater for all tastes. What’s more, with numerous hotels available in each location, you don’t have to worry about going over budget either.
Crete, Greece
For being one the most unique and the largest of the Greek islands, Crete sure doesn’t get enough love. Cue your chance to bring it yours. While honeymooners and hopeless romantics alike flock to popular islands such as Mykonos and Santorini, few venture out to this incredibly scenic (and more affordable) southern Greek island. If you’re planning a trip here, remember that the island is split into four administrative regions: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lassithi, each known for their own specialties. Chania and Rethymno, the westernmost prefectures of Crete, are considered the most romantic of the lot, with their quaint alleyways, stunning Byzantine architecture and, of course, your pick of beautiful, secluded beaches. To the east lies Heraklion and Lassithi, both brimming with charming little villages, medieval castles, unique Caribbean-style vibes and beaches, and the famous Ideon Cave, where, according to Greek mythology, the powerful Zeus grew up. Crete is also home to an amazing food scene — so those romantic waterfront dinners are sure not to disappoint!
Bali
This self-styled ‘Ultimate Island’ has something to offer sun worshippers, culture vultures, and most importantly, hapless romantics. Along with the beautiful weather and sweeping beaches, Bali also has several attractions and activities that are perfect for couples. Why not treat yourself to spa accommodation nestled in the middle of Bali’s dense tropical rainforest? After a day of treatment, take a stroll among the blessed marigolds, sample some of the island’s famed cuisine and spend sunset on the edge of a towering cliff.
Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, Bali, is up there with one of the most amazing views in Indonesia. This T-Rex shaped cliff side at this beach has rocketed tourism into the sky with its natural iconic beauty. It is a secluded beach with white sands surrounded by turquoise waters. Sure that your better half will love this absolute picturesque beauty for a summer getaway. But be careful when you take a walk down to the beach because it takes around an hour and is only secured with a bamboo rail.
San Sebastian, Spain
Considered one of the crown jewels of Spain for tourism, a trip to this Basque Country beach town will have you saying maite zaitut (I love you) in no time. San Sebastian (or Donostia as locals call it) is home to breathtaking beaches, awe-inspiring architecture, and most importantly, drool-worthy delicacies all over the town. In fact, this town holds not one, not five, not even ten… but eighteen Michelin Stars within a twenty-five-kilometer radius. To put that into perspective, San Sebastian beats out other famous foodie cities such as Paris and New York City by a landslide when it comes to Michelin Stars per square meter. While you’re here, be sure to try the pintxos (pronounced “peen-cho”) which are bite-sized pieces of meat, fish, and/or vegetables served on top of small pieces of bread and considered a quintessential Basque Country cuisine. Oh, and don’t forget to sink your teeth into some seafood. Salt cod, boquerones en vinagre (pickled anchovies) and kokotxas (fish cheeks) are just a few of the world-renowned fish dishes you must try on your romantic getaway in San Sebastian.
The Maldives
The Maldives lie between southwest of India and Sri Lanka. They are known as one of the most romantic archipelagos in the world. Arguably the most romantic archipelago on earth, the Maldives is as close as experiencing a piece of paradise. Stay in an overwater bungalow along its crystal-clear turquoise waters, and you’ll feel like you’re on your own private island.
You can enjoy snorkeling during the day and then relax on the beach while drinking a glass of champagne and admiring a wonderful sunset in the evening. The colors here will remind you of the most stunning paintings you have ever seen. Even though most visitors to the Maldives are more than happy to while away the hours on its white-sand beaches with occasional dips in the ocean, don’t forget to take advantage of the excellent water sport opportunities, swimming with dolphins, scenic flights, and romantic dinners at sunset.
Paris
Known as the city of love, Paris has romance running through its veins. Best of all, you can experience the capital of France however you like, such as roaming the streets like a local or taking in every tourist hotspot imaginable. For an authentic insight into Parisian life, order (in French) some sweet treats from a patisserie and enjoy them in Parc des Buttes Chaumont or Square Rene Viviani. Alternatively, have your picture taken in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower or book a scenic boat tour down the beautiful River Seine.
Take a walk and feel the pulse of the city. Indulge your sweet tooth at one of the many patisseries dotted around the cobbled streets, then take a trip to the temple of love and share a kiss! Legend has it that couples who kiss at the temple will experience a stronger love and relationship.
Exploring the world is a fantastic thing! And traveling with the person you love is the best way to take a break from your everyday life, and rediscover your passion. Romance is in the air and the world is filled with stunning destinations for the perfect romantic holiday getaway. These incredible destinations are perfect for Valentine’s break, for the honeymoon of your dreams, or simply to spend some time with the love of your life.
